Introduction

BAT has a rich history, from the Discovery of Antarctica and its first sighting, through sealing, whaling and the Age of Exploration to the Heroic and Mechanical Ages up to the Antarctic Treaty and beyond.

The RRS Discovery was the last UK-built traditional wooden three-masted.  She took Scott and Shackleton on their first expedition to Antarctica, and now forms the centre-piece of Discovery Point in Dundee.

RRS Discovery, a barque-rigged auxilliary steamship built in Dundee for Antarctic research, and launched in 1901.
